What is an IPL photofacial?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is the well-established workhorse of light-based skin treatment. It delivers broad-spectrum flashes of light that are absorbed by pigment (sun spots, freckling) and by haemoglobin (redness, small vessels). Treated pigment darkens and flakes away over a week or two; vessels fade as the body clears them. IPL has decades of clinical use behind it and remains a genuinely good treatment in careful hands. Nothing here is a criticism of it.
What makes BBL® different from IPL?
BBL® (BroadBand Light) is Sciton®’s evolution of the same principle. BBL® HEROic™, the generation we run at Serene Rejuvenation, is its newest form. The differences are engineering, not marketing: tighter wavelength filtering, a continuously cooled sapphire contact for comfort, in-motion delivery that covers large areas quickly and evenly, and Intelligent Control™ software that keeps energy delivery consistent from the first pulse to the last. What is a BBL® session actually like?
After a physician consultation confirms the treatment suits your skin, the session itself is straightforward: eye protection on, cool gel applied, then a series of brief warm snaps of light as the cooled sapphire handpiece moves across the area: face, neck, chest, or hands. Most sessions finish inside an hour. Treated pigment darkens over the next day or two, looks briefly like coffee grounds, and flakes away within one to two weeks; redness softens as vessels fade. There is no wound and no bandage. Most patients go straight back to their day with sunscreen on.

Is BBL® better than IPL?
The fairest answer: BBL® is IPL, refined. If you were happy with photofacials before, BBL® HEROic™ is the same experience made faster, more comfortable and more consistent. If you were underwhelmed by a past IPL result, the difference often comes down to two things: the device generation and the judgement of the person setting it. Is a BBL® treatment a photofacial?
Yes. “Photofacial” describes the treatment; BBL® by Sciton® is the technology performing it. (And no, it is unrelated to the surgical procedure that shares the acronym.)
Do BBL® and IPL treat the same concerns?
