The Treatment
How it works
Microneedling uses fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, prompting it to produce new collagen, a process known as collagen induction. At Serene Rejuvenation in Surrey, BC, we treat with SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device, and every session is performed by Dr. Sundeep Sarai herself, so depth and settings are matched to your skin rather than a preset.
Over a short series, skin looks smoother and feels firmer, with a more even tone. Acne scarring softens, pores refine, and fine lines begin to settle. Downtime is minimal. Most clients look lightly flushed for a day or two, then carry on with sunscreen and gentle skincare.
How microneedling works: collagen induction therapy
The SkinPen® device carries a sterile cartridge of fine needles that oscillate rapidly as it glides over the skin, creating thousands of vertical micro-channels. Your skin reads these as small, controlled injuries and repairs them: growth factors are released, new collagen and elastin are laid down, and the treated area gradually remodels from within. This is collagen induction therapy. The stimulus takes minutes; the rebuilding continues for weeks.
Because collagen matures slowly, changes arrive in stages. Many people notice an early brightness within days as surface cells turn over, while firmness and the softening of scars develop over the following weeks and keep building between sessions.
Needle depth changes by area and concern. Thinner skin on the forehead is treated more superficially; acne scarring on the cheeks calls for deeper channels. Dr. Sarai sets these parameters for each zone before your skin is treated.
Acne scarring and texture: what microneedling improves
Acne scarring is the concern that brings most people to microneedling. Rolling and shallow boxcar scars respond to repeated collagen remodelling. The same process refines enlarged pores and softens fine lines, and it can also even out rough texture and improve the appearance of stretch marks.
Results build over a series rather than a single visit. Sessions are spaced roughly 4–6 weeks apart so each round of remodelling can settle before the next begins. One treatment leaves skin looking refreshed; a series is what changes texture. Most clients start with three, then reassess.
On our treatment menu, microneedling is the gentler entry point for texture work: mechanical rather than light-based, with a shorter recovery than fractional resurfacing. For deeply etched scarring or heavier sun damage, ProFractional™ and HALO® reach further into the skin. A consultation clarifies which fits, or whether they belong in sequence.
Depth, skin tone and safety: why a physician performs it
Microneedling is mechanical. It creates its channels with needles rather than heat or light, so there is no light energy for pigment in the skin to absorb. That is why it can suit a wide range of skin tones, including deeper tones, where light-based devices call for extra caution.
Sterility is straightforward with SkinPen®: each treatment uses a sealed, single-use needle cartridge, opened for your appointment and discarded afterwards. Depth, pass count and settings are recorded so the next session can build on the last.
Depth decisions are medical ones, which is why Dr. Sarai performs the treatment herself. Before treatment, she assesses your skin, health history and current products, screens for reasons to wait, such as an active acne flare or certain medications, and sets your depth and session plan. If your skin would do better with a different approach, she will tell you.
Whether this one suits you is confirmed at your consultation, after Dr. Sarai has looked at your skin.

FAQ
What is SkinPen® microneedling?
SkinPen® is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. It uses fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels, prompting your skin to build new collagen, a process called collagen induction. At our Surrey clinic, every treatment is performed by Dr. Sundeep Sarai.
Does microneedling hurt?
Most clients find it comfortable. A topical numbing cream goes on before treatment, so the sensation is usually a light vibration or faint scratchiness rather than pain. Deeper settings, used for scarring, feel more noticeable, and depth is adjusted with your feedback during the session.
How much downtime does microneedling have?
Minimal. Most clients look lightly flushed for a day or two, a little like a mild sunburn, sometimes with light dryness or flaking afterwards. Many people are back at work the next day; makeup usually waits until the skin has settled, as directed.
How many microneedling sessions will I need?
You will likely need a short series. Most clients book three sessions spaced about 4–6 weeks apart, which gives each round of collagen remodelling time to build on the last. The exact number is confirmed at a consultation, based on your skin and your goals.
How long do microneedling results last?
Improvements in scarring and texture tend to last, because the new collagen is your own tissue. Skin continues to age, though, so many clients choose a maintenance session once or twice a year. How long results hold varies from person to person.
How do I prepare for microneedling?
Preparation is simple. Arrive with clean skin, pause retinoids and exfoliating acids as directed in the days beforehand, and avoid active tanning in the weeks before your appointment. Mention any history of cold sores or current medications at your consultation so the plan can be adjusted.
What is the aftercare?
Keep it gentle for a few days. Cleanse with a mild cleanser, moisturise, and be consistent with sun protection while your skin remodels. Hold retinoids and other strong actives until you are advised to restart, and avoid active tanning between sessions.
Who is a good candidate for microneedling?
Many people with acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines or uneven texture are well suited to microneedling, across a wide range of skin tones. Active acne flares, some skin conditions and certain medications can mean waiting or adapting the plan, so candidacy is confirmed at a consultation.
