What’s really
going on
Sebaceous hyperplasia is the medical name for oil glands that have enlarged over time. Each gland keeps producing oil as it should, but the gland itself grows, showing through the skin as a small, soft, yellowish bump, often with a dimple at its centre. They are most common on the forehead, cheeks and nose, tend to appear in adulthood, and are harmless, though they rarely go away on their own.
An enlarged oil gland can resemble other skin growths, which is why Dr. Sarai examines the bumps to confirm what they are before anything is treated. From there, treatment is matched to the size, number and location of the glands, with options running from PCA chemical peels through physician-performed laser resurfacing with HALO® or ProFractional™ for spots that need more depth. How many spots are treated, and with what, is confirmed together at your consultation.
