Serene Rejuvenation offers ten Sciton® light and laser treatments: five in BBL® HEROic phototherapy and five in laser skin resurfacing. No single option suits every skin, every concern and every calendar. Here is how Dr. Sundeep Sarai thinks through the choice, so you arrive at your consultation already speaking the language.

Start With the Skin

How your skin is built

Your skin has three layers, and each one does a different job. The epidermis is the thin outer layer you can see and touch. It is a stack of constantly renewing cells: new ones form at the bottom, rise to the surface, and are shed. It also holds melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour and darkens into sun spots.

Beneath it is the dermis, a much thicker layer where collagen and elastin give skin its firmness and bounce. Blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles and oil glands all live here, and most of what we read as aging (fine lines, laxity, scarring) happens in this layer.

Under both sits the hypodermis, a cushioning layer of fat, with muscle beneath. Light and laser treatments never reach this deep. Every treatment in this guide works by reaching one of the two layers above and doing something specific there: clearing pigment or vessels, or rebuilding collagen. Once you can picture the layers, the rest of this guide reads easily.

Three words that explain every laser

Every treatment below is a combination of these three ideas. Once you know them, the comparison table reads itself.

Ablative

An ablative laser physically removes skin. The laser energy is absorbed by the water in your skin cells and vaporizes a precisely controlled layer, taking damaged surface tissue with it. The body then replaces what was removed with fresh new skin and new collagen. Think of it like sanding and refinishing a wooden floor: the worn surface is taken off so a new one can form. Because the skin’s surface is actually broken, ablative treatments give the most dramatic change per session but need real healing time, with redness, peeling, and several days or more of downtime.

Non-Ablative

A non-ablative laser heats the deeper layers of skin without breaking the surface. The top layer stays intact while the warmth underneath signals the body to build new collagen and remodel over the following weeks. Think of it like renovating the framing of a house without touching the paint: nothing looks removed from the outside, but the structure underneath is rebuilt. Results build more gradually and usually take several sessions, but downtime is minimal, often just a day or two of mild redness.

Fractional

Fractional describes how the laser is delivered rather than how strong it is. Instead of treating 100% of the skin’s surface, the beam is split into thousands of pinpoint columns that treat only a fraction of the area, leaving bridges of untouched healthy skin between them. Think of aerating a lawn: small plugs are treated while the grass around each one stays healthy and drives fast recovery. The untreated skin helps the treated columns heal quickly, so fractional treatments deliver meaningful correction with far less downtime than treating the whole surface at once. Both ablative and non-ablative lasers can be fractional.

Depth, Made Visible

How deep is a micron?

A micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre. The epidermis, the visible, protective layer, is only about 50–100 microns thick on the face. Beneath it, the dermis holds the collagen, vessels and follicles that keep skin firm, extending roughly 2,000 microns down before giving way to the hypodermis, the subcutaneous fat layer.

Wavelengths, Plainly

Why the colour of light matters

Different wavelengths of light are absorbed by different things in your skin, called chromophores. Shorter, visible wavelengths are grabbed by pigment and blood; longer infrared wavelengths pass deeper and are absorbed by water. That single fact is why one machine can treat acne, sun spots, redness, hair and laxity: BBL® HEROic simply filters its broadband flash to the wavelength the target absorbs. The three ST filters open the infrared band at different points, so SkinTyte® firming and hair treatments can be matched to your skin tone.

Melanin

The pigment that gives colour to sun spots and hair. It soaks up visible light, so BBL® can darken and lift sun spots and treat hair at the follicle.

Hemoglobin

A protein found inside your red blood cells that is responsible for the bright red colour of your blood. It absorbs green and yellow light, so those filters can calm redness and fade visible vessels without harming the skin around them.

Water

Found in every skin cell. Water absorbs infrared light, which is how SkinTyte® warms the deeper layers to firm skin and how HALO® reaches deep below the surface.

BBL® HEROicThe photofacial: sun damage, age spots, redness & vessels · minimal downtime

BBL® HEROic is not a laser at all. It is BroadBand Light, a medical-grade evolution of IPL that delivers a wide band of filtered light into the skin. The light is absorbed by melanin in sun spots and pigmentation, and hemoglobin in redness and visible vessels. The energy converts to heat exactly where it is absorbed, so treated spots darken and flake away over the following one to two weeks while vessels are gently sealed, with no tissue removed and minimal downtime. Eight swappable filters let Dr. Sarai tune every pass to your skin and your concern, and the HEROic (High Energy Rapid Output) platform treats large areas quickly, so face, neck and décolleté fit comfortably in one visit. A course of three to five treatments is recommended, followed by regular maintenance sessions.

SkinTyte®Non-invasive firming for skin laxity · face, neck & body

SkinTyte® treats skin laxity without needles or surgery. It uses infrared light between 800 and 1400 nm, wavelengths absorbed by water rather than pigment, to deliver uniform, deep heating into the dermis while a cooled sapphire plate keeps the surface comfortable. The heat causes existing collagen to contract and signals the skin to build new collagen over the following months. Sessions are performed in a continuous sweeping motion, feel like spreading warmth, and need minimal downtime. Most people see excellent results after five treatments, followed by continued maintenance sessions, with the collagen response continuing for three to six months.

SkinSmoothThe texture step: pores, fine lines & crepey skin

SkinSmooth is the texture step in the BBL® HEROic range. A dedicated 640S filter, paired with software that precisely shapes each pulse, targets the appearance of pores, fine lines and crepey skin on the cheeks, around the eyes and mouth, and on the neck and arms. It works as a standalone series or as the finishing pass after a BBL® HEROic treatment; at Serene Rejuvenation it is a complimentary add-on to BBL® HEROic when Dr. Sarai determines it is suitable. Plans are typically five treatments when combined with BBL® HEROic; results take longer as a standalone treatment. Downtime is minimal: mild, brief redness at most.

Forever Clear BBL®Active acne, treated with light

Forever Clear BBL® treats active acne with light. Blue light at 420 nm penetrates the pores to reduce acne-causing bacteria, while yellow light at 560 nm calms the redness and inflammation acne leaves behind. An infrared pass in motion can be added to support the skin’s healing response. Downtime is minimal, and treatment is gentle enough for teenage skin. Acne responds to accumulated sessions, so plans are typically a series of six, with lesion-specific sessions available for smaller breakouts.

Forever BARE BBL®Long-term hair reduction with in-motion comfort

Forever BARE BBL® is hair removal done the BBL way. Rather than firing single high-energy blasts, it delivers rapid, low-energy pulses in constant motion, heating every follicle evenly while a continuously cooled sapphire plate keeps the skin comfortable. The light is absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle and converts to heat, which disables the follicle’s ability to produce new hair while the surrounding skin is left alone. Because hair only responds while in its growth phase, treatment is a planned series, typically six sessions, with occasional maintenance visits after.

Laser · erbium resurfacing

NanoLaserPeelThe “weekend peel” · the lightest erbium treatment

The NanoLaserPeel is the lightest treatment in the erbium resurfacing family, performed with the Contour TRL laser at its shallowest settings. It removes only the outermost few microns of the epidermis, the layer of dull, dead cells that ordinary exfoliation cannot fully reach. Sometimes called a “weekend peel,” it needs only topical numbing and about one to two days of social downtime, making it suited to dullness, rough texture, very fine lines, and pre-event skin refreshes. It is also a popular entry point for patients new to laser treatments.

MicroLaserPeel®A precision peel, set to the micron

The MicroLaserPeel is a step deeper: a precision partial-epidermal peel that removes a uniform 10 to 50 microns of skin across the full treatment area. Because the ablation depth is set to the micron, it is more controlled and predictable than a chemical peel or microdermabrasion, and deep enough to improve mild wrinkles, superficial pigmentation, keratoses, and uneven texture. Typical recovery is three to five days of redness and peeling, positioning it between the NanoLaserPeel and deeper resurfacing treatments.

HALO®Ablative-level results with non-ablative-level downtime

Halo is the first hybrid fractional laser, meaning it delivers two wavelengths into the same microscopic treatment zones in a single pass: a non-ablative 1470 nm wavelength that heats the deeper dermis (up to about 700 microns) to trigger collagen remodeling, and an ablative 2940 nm erbium wavelength that removes damaged surface tissue (0 to 100 microns). Treating both layers at once is what gives Halo its signature trade-off: results approaching an ablative resurfacing with downtime closer to a non-ablative treatment, typically a few days of redness and light peeling. It targets sun damage, uneven tone and texture, fine lines, and enlarged pores.

ProFractionalPinpoint channels that rebuild collagen where scars live

ProFractional is an ablative fractional erbium:YAG laser. Rather than removing an entire layer of skin, it ablates thousands of clean microscopic channels into a fraction of the treatment area, reaching depths from 25 up to 1500 microns, while the untouched skin around each channel drives rapid healing. The channels trigger a wound-healing response that activates fibroblasts and rebuilds collagen deep in the dermis, which makes it particularly strong for acne scars, deeper wrinkles, and firmness. Depth and optional coagulation are independently adjustable.

Contour TRL Deep ResurfacingThe deepest reset: etched lines & advanced sun damage

The Contour TRL is Sciton’s erbium:YAG resurfacing laser and the platform behind the NanoLaserPeel and MicroLaserPeel. Its defining feature is tunability: the depth of tissue removal (from roughly 4 up to 200 microns per pass) and the amount of heating left in the skin can each be adjusted independently, so a single device spans everything from a light refresh to deep full-field resurfacing of etched-in lines, sun damage, and scarring. Because erbium energy is absorbed by water far more efficiently than CO2 laser energy, it vaporizes tissue precisely with minimal unwanted heat injury to surrounding skin.

Common Questions

Which treatment, answered plainly

Which laser is best for acne scars?

Usually ProFractional, sometimes with HALO® layered over the full face for surrounding texture. Depth and pattern of scarring decide it, assessed in person by Dr. Sarai.

Which has the least downtime?

Of the laser treatments, the NanoLaserPeel: most people are back to their routine within a day or two. Downtime then rises step by step through MicroLaserPeel®, HALO® and ProFractional, with Contour TRL needing the longest recovery. If your priority is minimal downtime, BBL® light therapy is the gentlest option of all.

How soon will I see results?

Skin looks fresher as soon as healing completes: days for the lighter treatments, two to three weeks for Contour TRL. The deeper change is collagen, which rebuilds over roughly three to six months. Expect your result to keep improving after your skin has already healed; that is the treatment working, not luck.
